Chorley 22nd quiz takes Gordon Burns down memory lane
3:58pm Wednesday 25th January 2012

One of television’s most famous quiz and news hosts returned to Chorley this week to ask questions at a school competition – 22 years after he presided over the inaugural contest.
Former Krypton Factor host, Gordon Burns, who later spent several years presenting the BBC’s regional news was the man at the helm at the Chorley Primary Schools Quiz Final on Monday.
The event, held as always at Southlands High School, saw an audience of 250 watch 20 teams of four from all over the borough compete for the prize.
Deputy headteacher Brian Souter said: “Gordon Burns was the quizmaster at our first quiz final and came back 22 years later.
“In that time more than 30,000 questions have been asked in Southlands Quiz League and final.
“The quiz has six theme rounds and a marathon round.
“We’re very grateful for Gordon for taking the time to visit us again.
“He was kept busy signing autographs until almost 10pm.”
The quiz league had been taking place in schools from September-November and the league champions were Coppull Primary.
On the finals evening the champions were St Peter’s with a score of 170 points and runners up were Coppull Parish.
All teams received certificates and a number of trophies were presented.
Sue Hamilton, assistant headteacher, said: “Gordon was an excellent questionmaster.
“He added a number of anecdotes, such as he has interviewed every Prime Minister since Edward Heath in 1972.”
